Vortrag/Podium

Talk.

Microphones, loudspeakers and gestures: fostering the dialogue (Themenschwerpunkt Artistic Research; in englischer Sprache)

In this talk, Cathy van Eck reflects on her artistic research practice and its strong interconnection with her artistic work. By exploring productive combinations of different media and formats of dissemination, the research process is not only enriched but also becomes an ongoing exchange with her practice. Taking her own work with microphones, loudspeakers, movement and sensors as a starting point, she draws connections to works by other artists

Cathy van Eck (born 1979 in the Netherlands) composes relationships between everyday objects, human performers and sound. She is interested in setting her gestures into unusual, surprising or poetic relationships with sounds, mainly by electronic means. The result could be called performative sound art, as it combines elements of performance art, electronic music and visual art. Her work is presented at festivals and exhibitions worldwide and she is a professor at the Bern Academy of the Arts, Switzerland. Her book Between Air and Electricity – Microphones and Loudspeakers as Musical Instruments was published in 2017. She is a member of iii (instruments inventors initiative) and lives and works in Zurich.
