In der Reihe «MusicTalks» kommen Expertinnen und Experten zu Wort. Mit Vorträgen und in Gesprächen regen sie zum Nachdenken über Musik an, eröffnen neue Hörperspektiven oder zeigen Hintergründe zu musikalischen Ereignissen auf, die das Erleben von Musik noch intensiver gestalten können.
There is perhaps no better way to experience the continuous dramatic shifts and evolving spirit of 20th-century America than through its song.
Tulane University’s Lillian Gerson Watsky Professor of Music, Amy Pfrimmer, will guide a one-hour musical tour exploring the composers, performers, musical traditions, and cultural influences responsible for creating and distinguishing the sound of Americana from the great musical traditions of Europe.
Moving across the century, the discussion will include the American classical traditions of lyric theater, high classical song, classical cabaret, and the American Songbook, while also nodding to the profound influences of jazz, spirituals, and other uniquely American musical practices. Along the way, we will encounter the music of prominent, trailblazing composers from historically underrepresented groups whose music helped expand and redefine the American musical landscape. Through musical examples and discussion, audiences will hear how American song both reflected and shaped the people, places, ideas, and extraordinary cultural transformations.
